Window Cartons
Window cartons combine a die-cut opening with a clear PET or acetate patch so shoppers see the actual product inside before buying.
Product Overview
Window cartons let the product sell itself by cutting a clear opening into the carton face and backing it with a transparent PET or acetate patch, so shoppers see the real item before they buy. Packlic die-cuts the window to any shape that suits your product and applies a crystal-clear film patch on the inside, sealed neatly so the pack stays dust-tight around the opening. The window is engineered to leave enough surrounding board for structural strength and branding, balancing visibility with rigidity. Built on SBS and kraft board with full-colour offset print, a carton with window works beautifully for foods, cosmetics, candles, toys and gifts where seeing the colour, texture or portion of the product is what closes the sale on shelf.
- Die-cut window opening
- Clear PET or acetate patch

- Custom window shapes
- Dust-tight sealed patch
The material is where a box earns its reputation, so we build on six industry-grade stocks: Kraft Board, Corrugated Board, Coated Art Board (C1S), Rigid Greyboard, Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS), and Metallic Board. Each answers a different brief, eco-friendly kraft suits artisan and sustainable brands, dense greyboard carries luxury rigid boxes, and virgin-fibre SBS gives cosmetics, pharma, and premium retail their crisp finish. Need economical corrugated mailers, or the substantial feel of a magnetic-closure rigid box? Either way the FSC-certified stock we select is made to perform on shelf, in transit, and at unboxing.
How a box is finished decides whether it gets noticed or gets remembered. Choose from soft-touch matte lamination, high-gloss lamination, silk lamination, spot UV coating, gold and silver foil stamping, embossing, debossing, and aqueous coating. Spot UV lays a glossy accent over a matte field so your logo catches the light first. Soft-touch lamination wraps rigid boxes in a velvety texture that signals quality the moment they are handled. And foil stamping on SBS or coated art paper brings the sharp metallic shine that cosmetic, fragrance, and gifting brands lean on to support premium pricing and create unboxing moments worth sharing.
Choose the paper weight and you decide both the hand-feel of the box and how well it holds up through the supply chain. Our range covers lightweight 8pt to heavyweight 28pt on the point system standard among US and UK packaging suppliers. Reach for 8pt–12pt on folding cartons and high-volume retail boxes; lean on the 14pt–18pt mid-range as the everyday workhorse, protective yet economical to ship. When a project calls for presence, 20pt–28pt gives the rigid, substantial feel behind luxury gift boxes, rigid set-up boxes, and premium cosmetic packaging, where the weight of the box telegraphs quality before it is even opened.
Window Cartons That Show the Product
Window cartons bridge the gap between a fully printed box and open display, giving shoppers a real view of the product through a die-cut opening backed by a clear film patch. That visibility builds trust and drives purchase, which is why the format is a retail favourite across food, beauty and gift categories where the look of the product is a major part of its appeal.
How a Window Carton Is Built
A window folding carton starts as a standard printed carton, then has an opening die-cut into one or more panels. A transparent patch of PET, acetate or PVC film is applied to the inside of the cut, glued flush around the edges so the window is sealed and dust-tight. The surrounding board is kept wide enough to preserve the carton's rigidity and to carry branding, so the window enhances presentation without weakening the structure. The patch is applied by a windowing machine before the carton is glued, so the film sits smoothly with no bubbles or lifting edges.
Window Films and Patch Options
The clarity and feel of the window come from the film patch. PET offers excellent glass-like clarity and good recyclability, acetate provides a bright premium look, and thicker films add a quality tactile feel to luxury packs. Windows can be shaped to a simple rectangle, a product silhouette or a decorative motif, and can be placed on the front, top or side depending on how you want the product revealed. The film gauge is chosen to suit the window size, since a large opening needs a slightly heavier film to stay taut and flat rather than dimpling inward. Anti-fog or anti-scratch films can also be specified where condensation or handling would otherwise cloud the view of the product.
- PET for glass-like clarity
- Acetate for a premium look
- Custom-shaped die-cut windows
- Front, top or side placement
Board and Structural Balance
Cutting a window removes board, so the design must protect the carton's strength. We size the opening and keep robust frame margins, using SBS or kraft in 16pt to 24pt caliper to maintain stiffness around the cut. On larger windows the frame width and board choice are adjusted so the panel does not flex, keeping the pack square and the product framed cleanly on the shelf. Placing the window away from the load-bearing scores and corners preserves the crush resistance the carton needs during stacking and transit.
Products and Industries
A carton with window suits any product whose appearance drives the sale. Food brands use windows for confectionery, bakery, pasta and gourmet items; beauty brands frame soaps, bath bombs and cosmetics; and gift, candle, toy and stationery lines reveal colour and design through the opening. Seeing the actual product reassures shoppers about quality, colour and quantity in a way printed imagery alone cannot. For handmade and artisan goods in particular, the window lets the craftsmanship of the item itself do the selling, which is why makers of soaps, candles and baked treats reach for the format so often.
Printing and Finishing
The printed board around the window is produced in full-colour offset litho with the same finishing range as any premium carton, including gloss and matte lamination, soft-touch film, spot UV and foil stamping. Careful artwork frames the window so graphics lead the eye to the product on view. Coatings are applied to the board panels while the film patch is kept crystal clear for an unobstructed line of sight. A well-designed border, sometimes with a foil or embossed frame, makes the window feel like a deliberate feature rather than a plain hole in the box.
Sustainability and Ordering
For eco-conscious brands we can specify recyclable PET windows or offer windowless die-cut alternatives, and the paperboard is available in recycled and FSC-certified grades. The cartons ship flat with the patch already applied, keeping freight efficient, and a design that lets shoppers see the product can reduce returns from mismatched expectations. Packlic produces window cartons from a minimum of 100 units with a free 3D mockup, wholesale pricing and fast turnaround.
